Feeling More Myself: Listening, Not Fixing

Feeling lost and stuck in life?

Why you aren’t broken, just overwhelmed.

If you are reading this, chances are you are someone who has been “doing the work” for a long time. You have read the books, listened to podcasts, studied more courses than you have time for, and journaled through countless self-reflections.

Yet, underneath the daily momentum of running a life, managing a career, or holding space for everyone else, a quiet part of you whispers:

“I feel exhausted. I feel lost, disconnected, and unfulfilled.

I just want to feel like myself again.”

This is a part you might only hear sporadically. Because it doesn’t fit the relentless demands of daily life, you brush it aside. You shoulder more responsibility and dull the part of you that yearns to feel freedom and joy.

Until that is, the voice pops up a little louder. A mild illness or a minor setback creates a forced pause. In the quiet, you realise something needs to change. So, you re-engage with finding the “fix.” You add a new development goal to your overflowing to-do list, scroll Instagram, and ask search engines for answers: Somebody, somewhere, must know what to do.

When tricky feelings arise, our culture gives us a very clear message: mask it, suppress it, or fix it.

Because productivity dips when we feel overwhelmed, we are taught to treat our inner state like a broken machine. We assume that anxiety, fatigue, or feeling stuck is evidence that we aren’t disciplined enough. But because there is little societal space to process big feelings, our incredible body takes over, numbing physical sensations to protect us from overload.

Lessons From the Nervous System

For eight years, I worked as a Therapeutic Lead for a Trust of Schools, co-writing and delivering Social, Emotional, and Mental Health programs. One of the simplest yet most profound moments occurred in the first ten minutes of every course: the explicit welcoming of all feelings, and the permission to come however it was that day.

Repeatedly, I saw the immense relief in parents when they shared their experiences in a compassionate space.  They realised they weren’t the only ones and that anxiety, anger, and overwhelm were completely normal. Thanks to Steven Porges’ Polyvagal Theory and the work of leading trauma experts like Peter Levine and Bessel van der Kolk, we know these emotions simply signal a nervous system in protective mode. For many, that realisation alone is transformational.

Today, I take this work significantly deeper. In 1:1 sessions and Constellation workshops, physical sensations are not problems to be solved—they are signposts. As Richard Schwartz (founder of Internal Family Systems) teaches, emotions are “trailheads.” There are no bad parts, and there are no bad emotions.

When we meet uncomfortable feelings with curiosity rather than judgment, disconnection and sadness become invitations to learn about the family, ancestral, and cultural fabric we are woven from.

You Stand Firm Beyond the Fog

Imagine standing at the base of a breathtaking mountain on a crisp morning. The path is visible for a few steps but soon becomes shrouded in a blanket of dense fog. The way forward feels muted, disorienting, and uncertain.

In that moment, do you assume the mountain has vanished?

Of course not. You know with absolute certainty that the mountain is still there. The earth still roots the trees; the stone still stands. The landscape is simply masked by temporary weather.

The same is true for your nervous system.

When you experience chronic burnout or a loss of your creative spark, you are living through a human weather system. The cloud is a protective layer your body creates when it has been carrying too much for too long. And just as the sun naturally burns away morning mist, the moment your system feels genuinely safe and supported, the fog begins to clear, revealing your core essence, unbroken, resilient, and waiting for you underneath.

Why You Can’t “Mindset” Your Way Out of Survival Mode

For high-functioning, deeply caring women who act as emotional anchors for everyone else, the fog builds quietly over years. You make silent trade-offs: trading spontaneous creativity for functional efficiency, personal passion for energy preservation, and clear boundaries for peacekeeping.

Eventually, this manifests as a dull, underlying haze.

This is why traditional self-help, or pure talk therapy, can fail to create sustainable change: survival mode does not live in your analytical mind. It lives in your body.

You cannot logic an exhausted, over-activated sympathetic nervous system into feeling safe. The body requires physical, sensory cues and a compassionate presence to let it know it can stand down. Sometimes these regulating cues come from nature; sometimes from the soothing tone of a voice; but ultimately, these parts seek to be witnessed by the compassion of your own conscious Self.

Listening in Action: A Somatic Example

Listening to your body is not a narcissistic quest to become self-absorbed. It is a fascinating journey that liberates us, allowing us to show up for others with greater compassion.

To give you an example of how this works: I recently noticed I was grinding my teeth. Knowing this was held tension, I brought it to a Kinesiology tracking session. In that held space, I quickly discovered this part was connected to my own present journey of finding my voice.

By meeting the sensation with curiosity rather than trying to “fix” it, the tension shifted. As the underlying story was witnessed, the habit dissolved.

Feeling More Myself is about welcoming whatever is showing up in the present, listening to its wisdom, honouring how it tried to keep you safe, and discerning your truth. When you accept these parts, you no longer feel the desperate need to repair yourself.

Moving From “Fixing” to Unburdening

Real transformation requires a fundamental shift in perspective. You do not need to become a “better” version of yourself through force. Instead, this work is about creating a sanctuary where your system finally receives the signal that it is safe to unburden.

‘More Myself’ weaves together powerful, root-cause modalities to facilitate this shift:

  • Professional Kinesiology: Uses gentle muscle testing to bypass the analytical mind, locating subconscious stress, ancestral burdens, or hidden dreams.
  • Family Constellations: Maps the underlying energy of your internal psyche and family line, witnessing liberating truths and giving back what was never yours to carry.
  • Self-Led Leadership & Internal Family Systems (IFS): A gentle method of meeting your protective parts so your core, sovereign Self can lead.

When the fog clears, you don’t become someone else. You simply become More Myself. Decisions require less agonising analysis, your body feels grounded, boundaries feel natural, and you move from chronic duty into deep joy, fulfilment, and ease.

A Simple Practice

Next time a big or uncomfortable feeling arises, rather than pushing it away, try pausing and offering it space. You can explore these journaling prompts or reflect on them in nature:

  1. Befriend: What feeling is present right now? Does it have a colour, shape, physical sensation, or location in your body?
  2. Inquire: How do I feel towards that part? What would this part like me to know?
  3. Offer the 4 A’s: If this feeling has been trying to protect you, offer it Acceptance, Appreciation, Assurance, and Assistance.
